Help desk SLA management compared: the plan you actually need
Prices are per agent per month, billed yearly, from each vendor's public pricing page. "Full SLA" means SLA targets, business hours and a warning or escalation before or at a breach, all on the same plan.
| Tool | Cheapest plan with SLA policies | Cheapest plan with full SLA | Price for full SLA | How AI is billed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Desk | Standard ($14), up to 4 SLAs | Standard | $14 | Zia generative AI is bring-your-own-key below Enterprise |
| Ticketagent | Starter ($24), 1 policy | Team | $49 | Pooled AI resolutions included per seat |
| HappyFox | Basic ($24) | Team (breach notifications) | $49 | Not published |
| Freshdesk | Growth ($19) | Pro (reminders and escalations) | $55 | Freddy AI Agent: 500 sessions included, then $49 per 100 |
| Hiver | Pro ($55) | Pro, "due soon" alerts on Elite | $55 to $85 | AI Agents listed on all plans |
| Help Scout | Standard ($21), 1 basic policy | Plus, 2 policies with conditions | $37.80 | AI Answers at $0.75 per resolution |
| Zendesk | Suite Professional ($115) | Suite Professional, alerts built with automations | $115 | AI agents billed per automated resolution |
What SLA management in a help desk has to do
A timer on a ticket is not SLA management. Before you compare prices, check that the plan covers the five things that decide whether your numbers are real and whether anyone acts before a deadline.
- Policies with conditions: different targets per priority and per customer tier, so a premium customer is not measured against the standard promise.
- Business hours and holidays: without them, nights and weekends count against you and every report looks worse than your service.
- Pause on pending: the clock should stop while you wait on the customer, or you are measured on their delay.
- Warnings before the breach: an alert at 75 percent of the time still saves the ticket. An alert after the breach only records it.
- Escalation: when the clock runs out, the ticket moves to a lead or another team without anyone having to notice.
If a plan has the first two but not the last two, you are buying SLA reporting, not SLA management. That is the gap that separates the cheapest plan from the one you need on most of the tools below. Our guide to writing a support SLA policy covers how to pick the targets themselves.
The 7 tools, plan by plan
1. Zoho Desk: the lowest price for a complete SLA setup
Zoho Desk Standard costs $14 per agent billed yearly ($20 monthly) and includes up to 4 SLA policies, one business hours set and multi-level escalations, which Zoho lists on every paid plan. Express ($7) has only a default SLA. Professional ($23) raises the limit to 10 SLAs per department. If price per seat is the deciding factor and your team is comfortable in a dense admin interface, Zoho is hard to beat. The trade-off is AI: below Enterprise, Zia's generative features run on your own AI provider key, so you set up and pay for that separately.
2. Ticketagent: SLA plus AI resolutions in one seat price
Ticketagent Starter ($24 yearly, $29 monthly) includes 1 SLA policy with business hours, enough for one promise across the queue. Team ($49 yearly, $59 monthly) adds unlimited SLA policies per priority and customer tier, breach warnings in the queue and in Slack, and escalations to a lead. AI classification sets priority on arrival, so the right clock starts at once, and every seat includes a pool of AI resolutions (150 per seat on Team) with no per-resolution fee. It costs more per seat than Zoho. It is the better fit when the AI agent is part of how you plan to hit response targets. See the full help desk software pricing.
3. HappyFox: SLA on every plan, alerts from Team
HappyFox lists SLA management on every agent plan, starting with Basic at $24 yearly for up to 5 agents. SLA breach notifications start on Team at $49 yearly. HappyFox also sells unlimited-agent plans from $1,999 a month, which only make sense for large teams. AI pricing is not published; the AI page asks you to book a demo.
4. Freshdesk: SLA on Growth, escalations on Pro
Freshdesk Growth ($19 yearly, $23 monthly) includes SLA policies, but Freshdesk's own support article says SLA reminders and escalations are available from Pro onwards, and multiple SLA policies also start at Pro ($55 yearly, $66 monthly). So a team that needs warnings pays $55 per agent. The Freddy AI Agent includes 500 sessions, then costs $49 per 100 sessions, and the Copilot add-on is $29 per agent on Pro and Enterprise.
5. Hiver: SLA for teams that live in Gmail
Hiver keeps support inside Gmail. SLA policies start on Pro at $55 per user billed yearly, and Hiver's help docs say the "due soon" status and its notifications need Elite at $85. If your team refuses to leave Gmail, Hiver is the natural choice. If it does not, you pay a premium for staying in the inbox.
6. Help Scout: a simple SLA, conditions from Plus
Help Scout Standard ($21 per user yearly) includes one basic SLA policy with no conditions. Plus ($37.80 yearly) gives 2 policies with conditions, and Pro ($63) removes the limit. Targets can run on office hours on every tier. AI Answers is billed at $0.75 per resolution, so AI cost grows with how much the AI does.
7. Zendesk: full SLA only on Suite Professional
Zendesk's SLA feature appears on Suite Professional ($115 yearly, $149 monthly) and above; Support Team and Suite Team do not include it. Zendesk's own help center says there is no built-in way to notify agents of an SLA breach, so teams build alerts with automations on the "hours until next SLA breach" condition. AI agents are billed per automated resolution. For a detailed look at that model, see our Zendesk alternative comparison.
Two others come up often. Jira Service Management has SLA calendars and a free plan for 3 agents, but its pricing page does not say which plan includes SLAs, so check with Atlassian. Gorgias includes SLAs on every helpdesk plan but prices by ticket volume rather than seats, which suits ecommerce stores more than B2B support teams.
What SLA management costs for a 5-agent team
Here is the yearly bill for five agents on the cheapest plan that gives each tool full SLA management, at annual prices, before tax and add-ons.
| Tool and plan | Per agent per month | 5 agents per year | AI included |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zoho Desk Standard | $14 | $840 | Bring your own AI key |
| Help Scout Plus | $37.80 | $2,268 | AI Answers extra, $0.75 per resolution |
| Ticketagent Team | $49 | $2,940 | 750 AI resolutions a month pooled |
| HappyFox Team | $49 | $2,940 | Not published |
| Freshdesk Pro | $55 | $3,300 | 500 AI Agent sessions, then $49 per 100 |
| Hiver Pro | $55 | $3,300 | AI Agents on all plans |
| Zendesk Suite Professional | $115 | $6,900 | Per automated resolution |
Seat price is only half the comparison. If you expect AI to answer 300 routine tickets a month, the per-resolution and per-session models add a line that grows every month the AI does well. Run your own ticket volume through each model before you decide.
Which help desk with SLA management fits your team
- Lowest cost per seat, small team, no AI plans: Zoho Desk Standard.
- You sell a premium support tier and want AI to help hit first response targets: Ticketagent Team, with AI resolutions included per seat.
- Your team works in Gmail and will not move: Hiver Pro.
- Email-first team with one simple promise: Help Scout Standard, moving to Plus when you add customer tiers.
- You already run Zendesk and need SLAs: Suite Professional, or compare the move on our Zendesk alternative page.
- Five agents or fewer leaving a shared inbox: read our notes on help desk software for small business first.
If most of your urgent tickets start with an outage, pair the help desk with uptime monitoring so you know about the incident before the first customer email arrives and the SLA clock starts.
Questions buyers ask about help desk SLA management
What is the best help desk software with SLA management?
The best help desk software with SLA management depends on budget and AI plans. Zoho Desk Standard is the cheapest complete setup at $14 per agent yearly. Ticketagent Team at $49 includes breach warnings, escalations and AI resolutions in the seat. Freshdesk and Hiver need their $55 Pro plans for full SLA features.
Which help desk has the cheapest SLA management?
Zoho Desk Standard, at $14 per agent per month billed yearly, is the cheapest plan we found with SLA policies, business hours and escalations together. Freshdesk Growth and Help Scout Standard also include SLA policies at $19 and $21, but without escalations or conditions.
Does Zendesk have SLA breach alerts?
Not as a built-in notification. Zendesk's help center says there is no native way to notify agents of an SLA breach, so teams create automations on the hours-until-breach condition and views sorted by breach time. SLAs themselves need Suite Professional or higher.
Does a small support team need SLA escalations?
If you promise response times to customers in writing, yes. On a team of three to five, nobody watches the queue full time, so a warning before the deadline and an automatic handoff to a lead is what keeps the promise. For internal targets only, a single policy with business hours is usually enough.
